Business
Before You Install a WordPress AI Chatbot Plugin, Read This Proven Checklist
Your website gets the same questions every week. What are your hours? Do you ship to my area? How much does the basic package cost? Someone on your team answers them by email, usually hours later, and some of those visitors have already bought from a competitor.
A WordPress AI chatbot plugin fixes that by answering from the pages you've already written, day or night. Plugins vary a lot, though. Several make things up, and others send your visitors to links you'd never approve.
Here's what to look for, and how The Wow Bot handles each point.
Who needs a chatbot on a WordPress site?
Any business whose website gets questions. Good business websites answer them fast. Company size matters less than the number of repeat questions landing in your inbox.
Picture a family bakery. It gets asked about custom cake orders and holiday hours. Marketing agencies get asked about services and turnaround. Software companies field questions about plans and integrations. A large enterprise gets asked the same policy questions across hundreds of pages, and nobody can find the right one.
Each time, the answer already lives somewhere on the site. Visitors just can't find it fast enough.
What to look for in a WordPress AI chatbot plugin
Five things separate a useful plugin from a liability:
- Answers from your own content only. Bots that pull from the open internet will guess, and a wrong price or policy hurts trust fast.
- Control over links. Only links you approve should get shared, so an old promo page never gets recommended.
- Content that stays current. When you edit a page, the bot should know about it without you lifting a finger.
- Privacy you can explain to a customer. Know where conversations are stored and who can read them.
- No drag on page speed. Slow sites lose visitors before they ever open the chat.
If a plugin can't answer all five, keep looking. Our post on chatbot accuracy covers why bots invent answers.
How The Wow Bot handles each one
Our bot reads the post types you choose and answers in your voice. It only shares links you've approved, and it uses a curated context area where you write facts like prices and hours yourself.
On WordPress, the bot updates the moment you publish or edit. Indexing runs in the background after you save a post, and the chat script loads in the footer, so your pages stay quick.
Want a section left out? Add the CSS class wowbot-ignore to any block, like a staff directory or an internal note. In the block editor, it goes under Advanced, in the Additional CSS class box. That section gets skipped while the rest of the page is still read.
Conversations are private by default. Wow Bot staff can't read them unless you allow it, while your own team can always read them in your account. Data is stored in Canada, and visitor names and emails are encrypted.
Setting it up takes an afternoon
Installation is short:
- Upload and activate the plugin.
- Paste the site token and site secret from your Wow Bot account on the Connection tab.
- Pick the content types to learn from on the Content tab, then click Save and run index.
- Turn on the floating chat button, or add the [wow_bot] shortcode to any page.
Agencies running several client sites will like this one. You can export your settings to a file and import them on another site. Connection keys and passwords are never included in the export.
Not on WordPress? This same bot works on any website with one line of code, including Shopify and Squarespace. Those sites are read from the sitemap.
Waiting has a cost
Every unanswered question is a visitor deciding whether to wait or leave. Most leave. Your team keeps typing the same replies, and the questions that matter most get buried.
Picture a Monday where the repeat questions are already handled. By then, your weekly summary email shows what people asked, the Needs attention report flags weak answers you can fix in one click, and anyone who wants a human uses Talk to a person, which sends their details and the conversation to your team by email. We built The Wow Bot for non-profits first at Wow Digital, and the same tools work for any business that wants faster answers.

Frequently asked questions
Does The Wow Bot plugin slow down my WordPress site?
No. Our chat script loads in the footer of your pages, and indexing runs in the background after you save a post. Visitors get the page first and the chat button after, so your load times stay where they are. If the bot ever can't connect, the chat simply stays hidden and visitors never see an error message.
Can I hide parts of a page from the chatbot?
You can. Add the class wowbot-ignore to any section, like a team directory or an internal note, and the bot skips it while still reading the rest of the page. In the WordPress block editor, select the block and type wowbot-ignore under Advanced, in the Additional CSS class box. To leave out whole pages or folders, add a Never include rule in your account.
Does it work on websites that aren't built on WordPress?
Yes. Shopify, Wix, Squarespace, Drupal, plain HTML or any other platform works with one line of code. We read the site from its sitemap and keep answers current by re-reading it on a schedule set by your plan. WordPress sites get updates the moment you publish, which is why the plugin is the faster option there.
Can an agency copy the same setup across client sites?
Yes. On the Connection tab you can export your plugin settings to a file and import them on another site, which saves rebuilding appearance and content choices by hand. Connection keys and passwords are never included in the file, so each site still connects with its own site token and secret from its Wow Bot account.
Will the chatbot share links I haven't approved?
No. The Wow Bot only shares links you've approved, so an outdated page or an outside site never becomes a recommendation. Links to your own pages open in the same tab and the chat reopens on the next page with the conversation still there. Links to other sites open in a new tab.
